For the last 20 years, I have had the pleasure of raising koi in backyard ponds. We have moved multiple times and each time I have undertaken the effort of building a pond on the new property. Each pond has been bigger and more elaborate than the previous one as I added waterfalls and streams and implemented new ideas on how to better raise fish and grow plants. Building a pond is fun and quite satisfying, particularly if you enjoy landscaping type work. When the backyard pond is complete, however the fun is just beginning since you can now start stocking and interacting with its main occupants - fish, plants and scavengers.
KOI - The Fish for a Backyard Pond
My fish of choice for our backyard ponds have always been the graceful and beautiful koi. These colorful fish are long living, friendly and relatively easy to keep as long as the key principles that we know about building a pond are followed. They grow rapidly and will reproduce each year given the proper environment meaning only a modest initial stocking investment is required. All koi belong to one species Cyprinus Carpio but come in about one hundred different color varieties. These varieties are not genetically fixed which means that spawning one variety can produce offspring of other varieties or even a brand new color pattern. This means that each spawning season you will usually find different color fish magically appearing in your backyard pond.
Plants - Water Lilies, Aristocrats of the Water Garden
Another reason I persist on building a new pond whenever; we move is the ability to grow a variety of plants that would be impossible in a land only garden. These plants work synergistically with fish to create a balanced water environment that is beautiful and relatively easy to maintain. The aristocrat of pond plants is the Water Lily which will quickly become an aesthetic highlight of any garden. These magnificent plants grow virtually maintenance free and add unique color and fragrance to your property. Over time, the initial planting will spread and multiply to provide abundant cover for your fish and more beautiful blooms for your backyard pond. Lotus, Iris, Cannas and Water Hyacinth are other flowering aquatic plants that can be used to add shape and color to the pond.
Scavengers - Cleaning Crew of the Backyard Pond
I basically stock 3 different species in the pond to be the "cleaning crew" - snails, catfish and frogs.
- Snails are not particularly interesting but they serve the purpose of removing algae and waste products from the bottom and sides of the pond. They survive the winter and reproduce so a single initial stocking is usually sufficient.
- I stock a single albino catfish for the purpose of foraging on the bottom of the pond and consuming waste products. This fish is compatible with koi, grows rapidly and is fun to watch even though they are usually only seen during the evening feeding session.
- I stock tadpoles that quickly transform into frogs. The frogs can survive the winter and also reproduce. They eat insects, fish eggs, small fish and smaller tadpoles. They are quite vocal and contribute interesting serenades in the spring and summer particularly during mating season. They also love to sit on lily pads and sun themselves on a hot summer day. Frogs help keep the mosquito population under control and the pond environment in balance. Depending on where you live, native frogs may just show up in your backyard pond and there will be no need to stock any tadpoles (also depending on where you live, stocking non-native frogs is likely to be illegal).
A koi pond is a decorative addition to any garden. While there is an initial investment in time and money, after a long day at work, there is nothing more relaxing then than sitting beside a beautiful backyard pond, feeding the fish and listening the gentile sounds of the water.
