Itchy Skin - Stop The Need For Continuous Scratching
Is itchy skin driving you up the wall? Small patches of dry skin become irresistible to scratching which leads to more scratching and more affected areas. You have scratched so much that you have broken the skin and bleeding occurs. Here is some information and hopefully some relief to your itchy skin.
Why Is My Skin So Itchy?
There can be many different reasons for itchy skin and finding the ones behind the scratching can be difficult. Here are a few causes to consider:
- Coming in contact with an irritant - the soaps and detergents you use everyday might be the culprit and you may have to consider changing the brand you use in the shower or bath, in your laundry cycle, or in the dishes you wash.
- Natural infections - you could happen to come in contact with naturally occurring poisons from plants like poison oak, ivy or sumac. As well, insect bites and stings could bring on the urge to scratch.
- Weather and the seasons - dry winter air or the heat of the summer months can cause skin to dry out and become irritated and increase the desire to itch.
- Drugs and Medication - sometimes the medications we use can react with our bodies, leaving rashes and itchy skin.
- Stress? - Yes, even stresses in your life, such as financial worries, work-related concerns, and relationship troubles can lead to itching
What Can I Do About It?
You probably want something that will stop the itching, right? If you have been dealing with itchy skin for any length of time, you most certainly know the need to instant relief.
As far as dealing with all the scratching, you have a few ways you can get the need to scratch to subside:
- Treat with cold - taking a cold shower, running cold water over the affected area or using ice packs can help deaden the itch. You might think that taking a hot shower is a good idea - and it feels good at the time - but in the end, heat does no good.
- Creams and lotions - there are a variety of anti-itching creams and lotions you can try that can contain camphor, menthol, phenol, pramoxine, and benzocaine. Each application will help numb the nerve endings and reduce the need to scratch itchy skin.
- Medicine - antihistamines such as Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, Claritin, and Allegra all can help reduce the itching. However, some rely on the sedative effect, making you drowsy, and ultimately less likely to scratch when you are sleeping.
