Over The Door

The first type of bar is the type that hangs over the door. The way this works is that the towel bar is attached to a mechanism that literally slides over the top of the bathroom door. When you close the door to take a shower, there is the bar, waiting to hold your towel until you need it.

Often times this is the best option when it comes to accessories for those who live in a small apartment or an apartment they cannot make alterations to. Since this fits on the door, you do not have to look for wall space to use to hang it up - perfect for those extra small bathrooms. Also, some apartment contracts are very particular about any holes that can be put in the walls, even for useful accessories. This type of bar will be perfect for even those picky homes as there are no holes to be made in any wall to use it.

Attached to Wall

The next type of towel bars is those that attach to a wall in the room. These are honestly the most common type of towel bar. The way these work is that you will use two or four screws to attach the bar to the wall and make it a permanent part of your bathroom where you can always leave a towel so it will be there when you need it.

These are often used in a couple of places in the bathroom. The first is near the tub or the shower to make sure you have a towel to dry off with. The second is by the sink. This type of bar will be used for hand towels.

Free Standing

The final type of towel bars is the free standing variety. These literally come on stands that you can place anywhere you want in the bathroom. These can be as much about being decorative as they can be functional. Many of these are beautiful and elaborate pieces that can be used to accent the rest of the décor.

The nice thing about free standing towel bars is that you can move them to wherever you need them in the bathroom and they will always be ready to work.
