Goa Carnival - 2011
Goa is a superb state of India, which is the most popular for its beaches, unique culture and exciting festivals. Goa Carnival is the most important and most awaited event of Goa. It is a 3 days festival, which is celebrated with great gusto in the month of February or March. Carnival is a Latin word, which means ''to take away meat'', hence during the carnival there is a strict rule to avoid the meat. This year Goa Carnival will be celebrated from 5th March to 8th March 2011.
History:
It is not a very new festival, in the past days when Goa was under the rule of Portuguese, an annual festival was celebrated, before four days of Lent. It was then celebrated as a little humorous, as the white colonial rulers were disguised as the black slaves, while the black slaves pretended as the masters by applying white plaster and flour on their faces. Now it is deliberately celebrated as Goa Carnival with great pomp and enthusiasm.
Celebration:
For these three days every particle of Goa gets highly indulged in the electrifying environment of festival. The festival has its significance importance among Christians, as it is the beginning of Lent, forty days before Easter.
The festival is commanded by the 'King Momo', and the celebration starts with the order of king on the opening day of carnival. During the carnival colorful parades are taken out, which involve several elements of circus, along with the masks, music, dance and public street party. The carnival is the rich blend of Hindu traditions, gaiety, and western dance forms. The parades are carried out throughout the night in the streets. At the evening times the grand balls are being held.
The foremost attraction of the Goa carnival is Red-and-Black dance, which is being organized on the final day by the Club National in the capital of Goa- 'Panjim'.
