Using Swimming Pool Shock for Pool Upkeep

Pool shock is a central component of your pool maintenance program. "Shocking" your swimming pool means giving it a big chlorine treatment to disinfect the water rapidly.

Pool shock helps dispose of chloramine, the chlorine that was employed to destroy algae and microorganisms and has since become ineffective, in the swimming pool. Chloramine in the swimming pool will cause a strong chlorine smell along with burning eyes from swimming, and prevents Free Available Chlorine, chlorine that still provides disinfecting capabilities, from accomplishing its work.

If you haven't utilized pool shock weekly and consequently don't know how much chloramine is in your swimming pool water, buy a chlorine test kit that provides results on Total Available Chlorine, which is the level of Free Available Chlorine in addition to the level of chloramine, and Free Available Chlorine.  The difference between the Total Available Chlorine number and the Free Available Chlorine number is the level of chloramine in the pool water. 

How much swimming pool shock you should employ varies according to your pool's size. If you are confused about how much to use, ask your swimming pool supply retailer for advice. The best time to use swimming pool shock is in the late afternoon or early evening. Run your pool equipment for a minimum of one hour after shocking to help control algae development.

If you close your pool for winter, it's important to use pool shock when you re-open the swimming pool in spring; for upkeep, use swimming pool shock one time weekly throughout the season.  Pool shock treatments are also utilized when specific adverse problems exist in your pool. Because there can be more than one cause of each problem, seek advice from a pool care professional if you aren't sure of what is causing your pool's symptoms before shocking your pool.

If swimmers complain of burning eyes after using your pool, your pool water probably contains excessive organic wastes.  As soon as you verify that, shock the pool using one pound of shock for each ten thousand gallons of pool water.

If your swimming pool dilemma is yellow or green dust on the flooring and walls of the pool, the difficulty is probably attributable to mustard algae.  After confirmation, shock your swimming pool, then follow with an algaecide that eliminates yellow algae.

If swimming pool water is green, the possible cause is green algae; a free-floating kind gives water a hazy green shade. This type of algae production is easy to fix if it is discovered early. After verification of the reason for your green pool water, shock your swimming pool and follow with algaecide.

If pool water has become hazy, cloudy or cloudy, the reason may be excess biological waste.  After confirming the cause, shock your pool using one pound of shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water.

Pool shock is made of un-stabilized swimming pool chlorine, whereas the chlorine you utilize each day in the form of chlorine tablets or sticks or granular chlorine is stabilized. Your pool's chlorine levels are going to be high for roughly a day after pool shock use.  Read labels to determine how long you need to keep everyone out of the pool.
