Maintenance Tips for a Sparkling and Germ-Free Swim Spa
Swim spas have become a popular alternative to swimming pools. One of the best things about a swim spa is its size – it's about the size of a hot tub. It can be set up even in a small backyard, so space is really not an issue when it comes to installing a swim spa. It can be set in a sun room or patio so that you can use it in cold weather too. It costs a lot less than a pool, making it an inexpensive option as well.
What exactly is a swim spa? Its key feature consists of a powerful water circulation system that ensures you get a good workout in the water. As a swim spa owner, you can enjoy relaxation, exercise as well as therapy, making it a welcome addition to just about any home.
However, spa owners often have to deal with troubles like profusion of algae growth, too much chlorine and a burning feeling of the nose and eyes. All these point to deficiencies in spa maintenance. Here are some guidelines that will give you a clear idea about how to tackle these problems.
Use a sanitizer to keep bacterial growth at bay
Read the manufacturer's manual for listed sanitizer preferences. Ozone and chlorine are two universal sanitizer choices. Only recommended amounts of chlorine granules or tablets should be used. An excess will induce a burning sensation in the mucus membranes and eyes.
Use pH test strips to test the water on a weekly basis
Change the spa water every four months at the very least, sooner if any abnormalities (changes in pool water color) are noted. Avoid the use of soaps, shampoos and oils in your swim spa as these not only clog the filter but cause water pH balance problems too.
Filter maintenance
Almost all swim spas are fitted with a water circulation pump and a filter. Sand filters are widely used. The water in the spa is circulated by the pump, but first passes through the filter that catches the dust and debris. If the filter gets clogged it will hinder normal water circulation through the pump and lead to mechanical breakdowns. The solution is to backwash the filter on a regular basis using a high-pressure hose. Many spa owners use self-service carwash stations for this purpose. Replace the filter every couple of years at the minimum, depending on usage and damages caused, if any.
It is prudent to run your spa for a few hours every day to ensure the water remains clean and filtered. However, this approach will not effectively remove any dirt deposited on the walls of the spa.
Once a week use a stiff brush or water vacuum to keep the walls of the spa free from corrosion and bacteria formation. Again, read through the manual for pool cleaners recommended by the spa manufacturer.
As maintaining swim spas can prove to be tedious, hiring the services of a professional spa cleaner may be a good idea. Inappropriate maintenance and negligence can lead to imbalances in the spa water and cause painful eye and skin conditions. Regular maintenance of your swim spa guarantees a germ and disease-free environment.
