Q: How should I clean out my spa?

A: Household cleaning agents are great around the house, but they are not useful in your hot tub or portable spa, as it alters the pH value of the water and also causes foaming of the water. You will need to use cleaners specified for your portable spa. It is best if you ask the spa manufacturer for their advice on which one to use.

Q: How often do I need to drain the spa?

A: This depends upon the usage of the spa and also the sanitising facility used in your spa pool. A spa that has well maintained and clean water and is also treated with a non-chlorine shock should be ideally drained every two to four months. This is important, as the build up of the dissolved solids becomes excessive and this makes it difficult to keep the sanitising system working and maintain the water balance.

Q: How often do I need to clean my filter cartridges?

A: This depends upon the bather load, but it still is good practice to clean out the filter cartridge every other week with your garden hose to dislodge hair or any other debris or foreign particles. Every time you change the water after three to four months, the filters should be soaked in a filter cleansing compound. A great solution is that you keep a spare filter at hand and when you are soaking one overnight in the cleaning solution, you can use the other one. This ensures a long life of the filters.

Q: Is it ok to use my car wax on the spa shell?

A: No. This is not a good idea at all, as the automotive waxes are meant only for car finishes and will not hold well in hot water conditions. Make sure you use a product meant for acrylic or thermoplastic spas.

Q: Why are there dark stains on my plastic spa fittings?

A: Metal compounds in the water cause the stains on the plastic fittings. You could use a spa stain remover or a scale inhibitor to prevent these stains from happening.

Q: Should I treat my wood skirting on the pool?

A: If you want it to look like it did when you bought it, then you can stain it back to the original colour. Painting a water repellent sealer on your wooden cabinet and skirting will prevent the rapid discolouration and maintain its original beauty.

Q: My spa is not heating the water correctly. Why?

A: One of the reasons can be a clogged filter. If the heater indicator light is not on, then it means that the heater is not getting enough or any power. You could even have a defective thermostat, pressure switch or flow switch. Ask an experienced professional to come in and have a look.
