Solar Heating Explained
The idea behind solar water heating is simple: capture free energy from the sun and use it to heat the hot water in your home. It's environmentally friendly and cuts your fuel bills, so shouldn't you be using it?
Admittedly, the early domestic solar heating systems were not always very cost-effective. But improved technology and the rapid rise in conventional energy prices have changed that situation. Today, solar heating is a viable option for most homes and more people are choosing it – not just committed environmentalists.
How it works
Solar thermal panels are fitted where they will collect the maximum amount of energy from the sun. This is usually on the roof, but can sometimes be on the wall of a house if the roof is unsuitable. A south-facing roof is considered the best because it faces the sun all day, but an efficient system can also be designed using an east-facing panel during the morning and a west-facing panel in the afternoon.
There are two types of solar thermal panels:
- a flat plate collector, with thin metal tubes sandwiched between a black metal plate underneath and a sheet of glass on top.
- an evacuated tube collector, which consists of a number of special glass tubes laid next to each other and connected at one end.
The flat plate solar panel is the most commonly used. The evacuated tubes are slightly more expensive but, because they are better insulated, they can be more effective in less favourable positions.
The thermal panels contain an antifreeze fluid, and it is this that is heated by the solar energy. When it is hot, this heat transfer fluid flows through a coil in a hot water cylinder to heat the water that you use in your home. As the water in the cylinder heats up, the transfer fluid cools and is pumped back to the solar panel.
Two systems are better than one
Contrary to popular belief, solar heating does work on cloudy days and even in a British winter! This is because solar panels collect radiation from the sun, not its light. But it is true that a domestic solar heating system can't produce the same amount of hot water on a cold, dull day as it does on a hot, sunny day. For this reason, solar heating is usually linked into the existing hot water system of a house.
When the solar heating system is installed, it will include a controller box that monitors the temperatures of the solar panel and the water cylinder, and regulates the flow of the heat transfer fluid. It also ensures that your conventional hot water boiler is only switched on when the solar heating alone is unable to keep the water at the required temperature.
Is solar heating right for you?
The exact figures will vary in individual cases, but solar heating can usually supply 50% to 70% of the average household's hot water throughout the year. That's a lot of showers and washing-up! How much difference would that make to your bills? And you'd also have the satisfaction of reducing your carbon footprint and doing your bit for the environment.

Solar Water Heating in Dragash Municipality, Kosovo $106.74 Water has been heated with the sun almost as long as there have been humans, but it is not until recently that more advanced and effective solar water heating systems have become common, and they are still gaining ground. Through the years new systems and new solar collectors have been developed. In Kosovo, however, not much attention has been paid to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and solar water heating systems is a new concept. However, a solar water heating system has been installed at the hospital in Dragash Municipality in southern Kosovo. The system is a pilot project, to see how well solar energy can be used in this area. This thesis examines the existing solar water heating system at the hospital in Dragash. The possibilities of using the fundamental principle of the solar water heating system at the hospital on residential houses in Dragash is looked into. The total annual incoming solar radiation for one square meter is calculated. The environmental, social and economic effects of solar water heating in Dragash is considered and discussed. Economic calculations are made on the effects of installation of solar water heating systems. Author: Dahl H. Solar Hot Water Heating Systems $109.93 The current state of our environment calls for an energy revolution. To combat the threats of global warming and growing pollution due to fossil fuels, the United States must shift away from depleting non renewable energy sources towards a more stable alternative. The most viable alternative at this time is solar energy. This paper observes the steps needed for a speedy transition towards this clean and renewable energy source. The first section of this thesis outlines the possible governmental and social incentives needed to power this revolution. While the second portion addresses the growing efficiency of solar hot water heating technologies. Through collaboration with the ecoMOD project at the University of Virginia, which elicits the design, build, and evaluation of sustainable affordable housing in the Charlottesville area, this thesis analyzes the inresidential efficiencies of two competing solar waterheating designs the flatplate and evacuated tube array. Their efficiencies have been tested through laboratory research under ideal conditions, however this study analyzes the two as they function under reallife conditions. The Solar House: Passive Solar Heating and Cooling $26.26 Shelter, like many other elements of human existence, comes at an extraordinary cost to our planet and its inhabitants. In the US alone, construction of 1.2 million new homes a year results in a massive drain on the Earth's natural resource base. Today, nearly 60 percent of all timber cut in the US is used in building houses. Not to mention construction wastes and the huge amounts of resources used in the day-to-day operation of the "modern" household. In addition to environmental costs, there are the personal economic costs -- the thousands of dollars each home owner spends each year to heat, cool, and power our homes.Today, a new generation of architects and builders is emerging, intent on creating homes that meet human needs for shelter while causing only a fraction of the environmental impact of conventional housing. The New Ecological Home provides an overview of green building techniques, materials, products, and technologies that are either currently available, or that will be in the near future. Author Dan Chiras provides a wealth of up-to-date, practical information for home buyers, owner-builders, and anyone interested in building for a sustainable future.Included are chapters on: The Healthy HouseGreen Building MaterialsWood-Wise ConstructionEnergy EfficiencyEarth-Sheltered ArchitecturePassing Solar Heating and Passive CoolingGreen Power: Electricity from the Sun and WineWater and Waste: Sustainable ApproachesEnvironmental Landscaping |
