Why A Solar Pool Blanket Is A Must With Any Kind Of Pool Heating

Even if your main source of pool heating is something other than solar, a solar pool blanket should be part of your water heating strategy. The main function of solar pool blankets is not so much to heat your pool's water but to retain the heat.

The sun is very effective at heating water but water is also very effective at losing the heat that it absorbs. Most of this heat is lost through evaporation at the surface. Open water tends to stay at a fairly constant temperature because it loses heat through evaporation just about as well as it absorbs it.

A solar pool blanket works by allowing energy form the sun to pass through and heat the water, while covering the surface to prevent or reduce evaporation. It does this by creating a barrier between the air and the water. Since evaporation occurs where water and air meet, this can greatly reduce or even stop evaporation.

With a solar pool blanket, your pool will work like a heat trap. Heat can get into the water through the sun's rays but has difficulty escaping. Because of this your water temperature will rise.

Even if you are using other forms of pool heaters you still have the problem of heat loss through evaporation. You may be paying for energy to heat your pool but much of it is being lost. With a solar pool blanket you can stop much of that heat loss so you will need less energy to heat your pool.

Even if you have an indoor pool that doesn't receive sunlight, a blanket can still pay off if you are using any source of heating for your pool water.
