Sand Filter Media - Pressure Sand Filter

Sand filter Media are beds of granular material, or sand, drained from underneath so that pretreated wastewater can be treated, collected and distributed to the land application system. They are normally used to polish effluent from septic tanks or other treatment processes before it is distributed on the land. All on-site systems are "no-discharge," meaning the wastewater must stay in the system and not leave the property.

The wastewater cannot enter surface water, streams, ditches or any water resources. After the filtrate is collected by the Sand filter Media under drains, it is then disposed of by a soil absorption system. Sand filter Media Media are the oldest type of municipal water filtration.Today, they remain a promising filtration method for small systems with low turbidity or algaecontaining source waters.

Sand filter Media does not require pretreatment or extensive operator control—which can be important for a small system operator with several responsibilities. What is Sand filter Media? Sand filter Media is a simple and reliable process. They are relatively inexpensive to build, but do require highly skilled operators.

The process percolates untreated water slowly through a bed of porous Sand filter Media, with the influent water introduced over the surface of the filter, and then drained from the bottom. Properly constructed, the filter consists of a tank, a bed of fine sand, a layer of gravel to support the sand, a system of underdrains to collect the filtered water, and a flow regulator to control the filtration rate. No chemicals are added to aid the filtration process.

Advantages Design and operation simplicity — as well as minimal power and chemical requirements— make the Sand filter Media an appropriate technique for removing suspended organic and inorganic matter.

These filters also may remove pathogenic organisms. Sand filter Media reduces bacteria, cloudiness, and organic levels—thus reducing the need for disinfection and, consequently, the presence of disinfection byproducts in the finished water.
