What Are Air Source Electric Heat Pumps?
What are air source electric heat pumps? A heat pump in general refers to a device that moves heat from one location to another. The location for the desired change in temperature is called the “sink”. Air source electric heat pumps work off electricity, though some models also work off gas. They come in a variety of sizes and are large enough and powerful enough to heat an entire home.
The size of air source electric heat pumps that you need will be determined by the size of the living unit. For the past part, air source electric heat pumps are used in locations that do not very often have extreme changes in temperature. Most of these pump systems are ideal for mild winters, with occasional freezing temperatures. This is contrast to other types of technologies like geothermal heat pumps and dual-fuel heat pumps.
One advantage of these types of pumps is that they are easy to install. This is probably why they are historically the most popular type of pump to use, because of the ease of operation and installation. The disadvantages of using such a system are related to the nature of the machine. Air source electric heat pumps operate by using the outside air as a heat source. Therefore, whenever there is an extreme temperature reported, the efficiency of the indoor unit is compromised.
In weather that is relatively cool, COP rate may reach 4.0. However, in freezing temperatures like below 20 degrees, the system may only reach a COP level of 2.5. The advantages of using this system are in a lower price--if not upfront then in the overall life of the pump. It is often recommended that if you use an air source electric heat pumps system that you ready a backup system in case of inclement weather (including freezing temperatures and strong winds).
