Pool Pump Filter

Taking care of your pool and/or spa doesn't have to be done by a service expert and it doesn't have to be complicated. Normal maintenance of your pool or spa really just needs to focus on two things: 1) the chemical balance of the water and 2) proper functioning of your pump and filter.

To check the water, the most cost effective ways are to: 1) purchase a water testing kit (testing strips) and test it yourself or 2) take a water sample to your local pool store. I prefer to take a water sample to my local pool store. That way, I know an expert is evaluating the water. Additionally, they tell you exactly what you need and how much of it you need. Contrary to common belief, adding chlorine (or salt) to your pool is NOT the only thing that needs to be done to maintain your pool's water balance. Sulfuric acid, alkalinity, calcium, and stabilizer are all used to maintain a pool's water. You will discover that most of the time, chlorine (or salt) and sulfuric acid are the most needed treatments needed. However, after a heavy rain you will also usually need alkalinity. Calcium is needed maybe once a year and stabilizer is needed once or twice a year during the very hot months. Your local pool store should stock all the chemicals you need.

Next, a quick check of the functioning of your pump and filter should be done. Before turning on your pool pump you should check the leaf basket to ensure it is not full of debris. This can slow the flow of water. Next, while the pump is still off, you should examine the pool filter. The pool filter should typically be replaced once every year or two. If you have a dog that loves to swim like I do, then you may want to consider replacing your pool filter every 6 months. The quality and condition of your pool filter will impact the water flow in the pool and the water balance. If your pool has little water movement because of a bad filter or poorly operating pump, you will most likely have problems keeping your pool water balanced even if you constantly test the pool water and add chemicals to it as directed.

The easiest way to see if your pool pump and filter are working normally is to simply place your hand over one of the water output valves in your pool to see how strong the water flow is. If it is very weak, then you may need to clean or replace your pool filter.
