The Pentair FNS Plus is one of the new generation filters. It has the manifold mounted on the top of the grids. The tank is made of a plastic material. One of the reasons for a plastic tank is cost. It is much cheaper to use this material than stainless steel. Also with the use of salt generators stainless steel can rust. The grids are still made of plastic, covered with the same basic material that has always been used. The three most popular sizes are the 36, 48, and 60 square foot pool filters. The reason for different sizes is larger pools need larger filters.
This filter uses Diatomaceous Earth, or it is often referred to as DE. This is a white powder made from microscopic skeletons of Diatoms, an ancient aquatic creature. It coats the grids to prevent the dirt from clogging the grids allowing the water to flow freely. Unlike the sand or cartridge filter the DE filter can trap particles between 3 to 5 microns.
The one nice thing about this filter is when it needs to be taken apart the grids, manifold and grid support can be removed as a unit. This makes for easy cleaning. The hardest part is lifting the unit out of the bottom of the tank, this is due to the weight of the unit.
This is a great filter, though it has a couple of drawbacks. One is when the grids are removed from the manifold there can be a slight problem replacing them. One of the problems is one of the grids is different from the other seven. So when replacing the grids back into the manifold one has to take note where the odd grid needs to be placed. Also the manifold has an air vent tube, this can cause a problem when placed on the ground. When trying to place grids into it the air vent tube can make it tilt and become out of balance, causing the unit to tip over. Another minor problem is there are two steel rods that hold the manifold and grid support together. This in its self is ok but when you try to replace the grid support back into position it can be difficult to place the steel rods back into the holes on the manifold. Once the rods are in position the unit must be tilted and the nuts placed on the steel rods.
Other than these minor problems when considering a pool filter the Pentair FNS Plus should be at the top of your list.
