Exploring Northern Italy
Italy is an addiction. The 19th century English traveller was well aware of its power. Shelley, Keats, and Byron succumbed, and Browning criedcheap airport car hire, Open my heart, and you will see graved inside of it, 'Italy.''' Perhaps there should be a sign at Rome's gates or Venice's lagoons advising visitors to abandon all hope of ever wanting to go anywhere else. Those who fall victim are condemned, like the ancient mariner, to collar other travel leers who have known its pleasures: Are the azaleas in bloom on the Spanish Steps in Rome yet? Does the old man still cane chairs in the piazza every afternoon? Did you happen to see the dawn in Venice? Was it that blend of scarlet and shell pink? Were you in Tuscany when the grapes were being harvested?
But, you might ask, would these poets recognize Italy today? While it's true that this mobile century has provided its share of good things such as the automobile and the airplane, these same advantages have brought countless tourists (not just the elite of the poets' day) and clogged the new highways with polluting cars that sometimes pass unattractive recent housing developments and industries not mentioned in travel guides, including this one. There is far more than enough splendor to seek out; you'll easily avoid the rest.
Italy's problems are familiar to all modern countries, including a very un-poetic inflation rate and growing crime (theft). What the poets might notice with approval, however, is that the Italian economy now includes a sizable middle class, the ones who own first and second cars, unlike the semi feudal situation the poets observed, when low wages and class distinctions made travel a bargain for foreigners but kept goods out of the reach of most natives. Many of the privileges they enjoyed depended on an economy of wealthy landowners and poor peasants.
The tourist seeking a living Disneyland will be disap pointed, but anyone who finds joy in fine art, cultural resonance in ancient stones, pleasure in delicious meals, and comfort in warm, responsive people will find a remarkable degree of all these things in 20thcentury Italy.
Gargano peninsula; in the south, the stunning rocky eastern coast continues around the tip to the lovely whites and beaches and gentle harbors along the inner heel south of Taranto.
The island off the toe, Sicily, has a mountainous center yielding to plains, encircled with small cove beaches along the coast. The other major island, Sardinia, west of the mainland, is ruggedly mountainous at the center, while its coasts are rimmed with whites and beaches.
The History of the North Italy's geographical variety is only part of its interest, however. Add to that the different historical destinies of its regions and you have the beginning of the myriad permutations in the country. Italy's history is exceedingly complicated, for rare is the conqueror who did not see something of value here, whether in natural resources or in enticing plunder.
Ancient Italy traditionally begins about 20,000 BC, although areas throughout the peninsula and Sicily were inhabited long before then. Among many central Italian tribes, the Etruscans whose origins have not been determined emerged victorious during the sixth century B.C., only to be defeated by Rome in 351 B.C.
From the eighth to the sixth century B.C., Greek and Phoenician traders were establishing trading ports in southern Italy, and soon they set up colonies as well. Tradition says that Rome was founded in 753 B.C. by Romulus and Remus, and this date, or at least that century, seems accurate, according to recent excavations.
The city's power grew, especially after kinship was abolished and Rome became a republic. Finally in 27 B.C., under Augustus, Rome became a full fledged empire that ultimately stretched as far west as England, through North Africa, and east to Syria. Invasions of barbarians from the north began about the time of Marcus Aurelius, and by then the Roman Empire was on the wane. When Constantine (whose Edict of Milan ended the persecution of the Christians) moved the capital to Constantinople, the handwriting on the wall was etched in stone.
During the middle Ages the Germanic Ostrogoths ruled from Ravenna while the papacy grew in influence, laying the groundwork for the Papal States that would follow. This was largely the work of Pope Gregory the Great whose strength of purpose helped the papacy emerge as a major power from the middle of the Middle Ages. In the The Geography of the North Italy, we all know, is shaped like a delicate boot, with Sicily just off the toe. France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia provide the northern political boundaries.
The Alps turn into the Apennines, which follow the western part of the peninsula down its length. The eastern flatland ends in the marshy lagoons of Venice to the north, and beaches run down both coasts. Lakes dot the north above Milan: Como, Orta, Maggiore, Iseo, and Garda. The far northwest coast ends at the French border in an arc of Liguria coast called the Italian Riviera.
