New Bathrooms on the Main Floor
Remodelling the main floor of your home can be an extensive project. Generally the area is made up of living space, kitchen, laundry and possibly a bedroom. When you are redesigning the space don't forget the value that new bathrooms add to a main floor.
You could simply choose a cloakroom suite, with just the basic functions available. Or you could allocate a corner of the main floor for a full scale luxury bath complete with Jacuzzi tub and walk in shower. Most homeowners will go for something in the middle of those two extremes, but the important thing is to make sure a new bathroom is included in your renovation.
Benefits of New Bathrooms on the First Floor
Not just a space for guests to use the facilities, having a bathroom on the first floor has numerous benefits. When the kids need to have a bath before bed, but the kitchen still needs to be tidied and time is running out, having a bathroom right on the main floor is very convenient.
Perfect for pet baths and early morning showers, with a bathroom available that is not right next door to the bedrooms you have more peace and quiet in certain times of the day. Also, when the guests are over there is no need to show them the way up stairs and down the hall - just simply lead them to the new bathroom just around the corner. The convenience will surprise you countless times.
How to Design For a First Floor Bath
Decide what the function will be most of the time. If this will only be a guest bathroom then by all means simply install a cloakroom suite. This should include a pedestal sink (either a full pedestal or a half pedestal model) and a toilet. Keep them white or another very light colour to keep the small room bright. You could also choose a wall mounted sink, although some of these models look industrial and are not suitable for home use.
If you need to include a shower consider a smaller model that makes good use of a corner or a tub and shower combo. That way you can optimize the space for the most function.
What about Windows?
For cloakrooms there is no need to include a window, although it does help with the light levels. Larger new bathrooms that include three piece fixture sets should include a window, although it may not be entirely necessary according to the building regulations.
If you do include a window, be sure to install frosted glass so there will be no need for a window covering to take up valuable space. Also, be sure to include venting of the room whether you have a window or not.
New bathrooms on the main floor are highly functional and add great value to your home. Before you spend all your time on the kitchen designs or living space remodelling, think about how nice it would be to have a new bathroom only steps away.
