The Art of Cleaning Under the Spray…
Seriously, there are few things more indulgent, more luxurious in life than a night (or a week!) in a hotel room. For a minimum of twenty-four hours, you don't have to cook, clean, make a bed, or attempt to find a missing sock in the dryer. Room service runs twenty-four/seven, concierge picks up and delivers your dry cleaning, and the first pay-per-view is complimentary. Ah, true bliss!
And if the bathtub is a double-wide with a Jacuzzi—
Which brings us to the most important room, and subsequently the most important relationship your guest have with their hotel room during their stay: the bathroom.
Hotel guests are enormously picky about the cleanliness of their hotel room. According to a national survey, nearly three-quarters of guests queried said they gauge how clean their room is by the cleanliness of the bathroom. Eighty-four percent of those queried inspect the bathroom within 15 minutes of stepping foot inside their room. Fifty-five percent check out the bathroom immediately upon entering. It's safe to say that the state of the bathroom can make or break a guest's experience.
So, what's the secret to an ultra-clean, ultra-enticing hotel bathroom, and therefore a very happy guest? The not-so-surprising answer is that hotels clean their bathrooms, top to bottom, everyday.
It is surprising, though, the chief complaint guests have about their bathroom is hair—in the sink, on the floor, in the tub, even on the walls. It's a fact that strands of hair heated by uber-powered blow dryers will stick to a wall as though attached with Super Glue. To rid a bathroom of stray strands of hair, work from the top down, dusting fixtures, walls, countertops, cabinets, doors, and so on, before you vacuum.
When applying antibacterial cleaner, heating counter tops, tiles, sink, toilet, and tub by as little as 10 degrees above room temperature with hot water increases the effectiveness of cleansers two-fold. Fill sinks and tubs with two inches of the hottest water you can draw and let sit for a few minutes. Drain the water and immediately spray antibacterial cleaner on all surfaces, including the floor. Work from the top down, spreading the cleaner around with an army of fresh, clean cloths. Allow the cleaner to sit five to seven minutes, to make sure each surface is thoroughly disinfected. For the bathtub and shower, use a scrub brush or nonscratch abrasive pad, scrubbing every square inch. A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is especially effective for hard-to-remove soap scum rings.
By far one of the most important steps in cleaning the bathroom is rinsing. The chemicals in cleaners are designed to attract soil and grime at a particle level. Rinse each surface thoroughly so grime can't build up and become a real problem.
For drying, use color-coded cotton cloths. Color coding, like blue for the toilet, yellow for the tub and shower, and green for the sink area, keeps things pristine. And you'll never make the mistake of using the cloth you just used for the toilet on the counter.
Finally, clean the mirrors with a glass cleaner and wipe dry. As a final step, rinse, wipe, and dry the bathroom floor.
Follow these simple but effective guidelines and your guests will want to shake your hand, but only after you've removed the rubber gloves.
