There are no binary perceptions about the fact that timely shower faucet repair can prevent a severe drain not just on precious resources, but also on your hard-earned money. All the more reason why I'm completely bemused by the kind of ambivalence that this repair project evokes.
So before I proceed further, let me set the record straight.
Repairing a leaky shower faucet does not require the hallowed presence of a grizzled veteran. It's a remarkably straightforward DIY project that can be completed with a few household tools. This pronouncement is sure to raise the hackles of several members of the plumbing community!
The Einstein Of Faucets
Before you get started, it's important to familiarize yourself with the nuts and bolts of faucets and their ilk. Faucet design can be divided into two distinct categories. While the slightly older variety makes use of washers to control the flow of water, in new-age faucets, this task is performed by cartridges. Either way, a dripping faucet is repaired by replacing these above-mentioned defective parts.
It's Now Or Never
Now that you have a fairly nuanced understanding of faucets and their parts, it's time to get down to work, repairing the faucet, I mean. Here's what you need to do:
- No faucet repair can begin without turning the water off. So make sure the main shut-off valve is closed completely.
- Next, remove the cap on the faucet. This would reveal the faucet handle screw that is required to be removed in order to take off the faucet handle. Make sure you complete this step with dexterity, as most of the time the handles are fairly intractable to deal with.
- The handles are off, but that's not the end, at least not just yet. Some faucets may also require the removal of a trim sleeve from the valve. Make sure you perform this process with utmost care and caution.
- You can now look your enemy in the eye- the valve stem. At the end of it is the haggard, old washer, waiting to be replaced. But to get to the faulty washer, you need to take off the packing nut that is connected to the valve stem.
- Replace the washer with a new part of the same size and dimensions. Sometimes, you need to replace the stem as well. In washerless faucets, it's the cartridge that needs a fresh lease of life.
- Put all the parts together. Turn on the water supply, and wait, with bated breath, for the final outcome. The result is sure to have more than just a token import on your dampened morale.
