Getting The Best CD Rates Online
Current certificate of deposit rates have been so low for so long how it is hard to imagine just two and a half years ago you could find 12 month CD rates as high as 5.00 percent. The national average 12 month CD rate is less than 1.00 percent and has been under 1.00 percent for over a year now. The current national average 12 month CD rate is 0.60 percent.
Of course you can find bank CD rates and credit union CD rates higher than the current national average rates. Bank of Internet USA, an online bank based in San Diego, California is offering current 1 year CD rates at 1.30 percent with a current CD yield of 1.31 percent. Credit unions are also offering 1 year CD rates higher than the national average rate. Pentagon Federal Credit Union is offering 12 month certificate rates at 1.25 percent with a CD interest yield of 1.26 percent.
Just before the financial crisis and the recession the average 12 month CD rate was around 3.00 percent. Several well known banks and well capitalized banks are offering 1 year CD rates at four percent to five percent. It will be nice to see rates go higher again as long as inflation doesn't spin out of control.
Shorter term and longer term certificate of deposit interest rates are not fairing any better. The current average 3 month CD rate is 0.27 percent, not much higher than the average checking account rate which is historically low because most checking accounts are non-interest bearing.
Banks and credit unions offering 3 month rates better than the national average include Hudson City Savings Bank which is currently offering 3 month rates at 0.75 percent with a CD yield of 0.75 percent. Nexity Bank is also offering 90 day rates and yields at 0.75 percent. Credit unions offering rates higher than the averages include Sikorsky Financial Credit Union, Inc, which is offering 3 month rates at 0.55 percent with a yield of 0.55 percent.
On the long end of the interest rate spectrum 5 year CD rates at banks and credit unions are only averaging 1.78 percent. All these rates are historically very low because the inflation rate is so low.
6 month certificate of deposit rates are not much higher than 3 month CD rates. The current average 6 month bank CD rate and credit union CD rate is 0.31 percent. These low rates make getting any kind of decent return almost impossible. This is especially hard for retirees to count on interest income from certificates of deposit for living expenses. More and more retirees having to dip into their principal in order to make ends meet.
Credit unions and banks offering 6 month certificate of deposit rates higher than the average include Hockley County School Employees Credit Union out of Levelland, Texas. The credit union's current 6 month rate is 1.40 percent with a CD yield of 1.41 percent. That rate is one of the best CD rates available right now for any 6 month certificate of deposit. That rate also is higher than most 12 month CD rates at banks and credit unions.
Banks offering 180 day bank CD rates higher than the average include Fayetteville Bank based in Schulenburg, Texas. Fayetteville Bank's current 6 month rate is 1.25 percent with a bank CD yield of 1.26 percent. Both banks have 6 month rates four times the national average rate.

This Film is Not Yet Rated (DVD) $22.61 Passionate cinephiles can be found casting quizzical glances at the erratic and often conflicting decisions made by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) as they slap ratings onto movies. So in an attempt to make sense of their working methods--which, until now, have remained shrouded in mystery--one of those cinephiles, Kirby Dick (TWIST OF FAITH), has made this full-length motion picture about the inner workings of the MPAA. Dick begins by examining the MPAA`s set-up as an anonymous group that is exclusively funded by the major Hollywood studios. Fundamentally established to prevent children`s eyes from seeing anything society would consider unsuitable, the MPAA has blossomed into a powerful force, with the difference between an R and an NC-17 rating possibly leading to millions of dollars forfeited at the box office. Actors and directors such as John Waters, Maria Bello, Mary Harron, and Kevin Smith offer their forthright opinions on these decisions, and Dick highlights many of the clips that have fallen foul of the censors. The director also compares and contrasts similar scenes from indie pictures and films produced by major studios, with the latter seemingly allowed far more leniency when it comes to avoiding the dreaded NC-17. In a wonderful twist that adds a strong narrative structure to the film, Dick hires a private detective to hunt down the MPAA`s members, thereby lifting the curtain on who these shadowy figures actually are. But the real cherry on the top of Dick`s movie is his submission of THIS FILM HAS NOT YET BEEN RATED to the MPAA, which helps highlight the appeals process, and reveals the involvement of the Catholic Church and major cinema chains across the country. Entertaining and informative, Dick`s movie is everything a documentary should be. Revelations come thick and fast throughout, and the director skillfully creates a palpable feeling of injustice that will leave many viewers feeling the MPAA is in urgent need of a drastic |

Hatchet - Rated (DVD) $33.21 The slasher film all but died with the release of SCREAM (1996). From that point on, the genre became populated with slick studio productions starring the latest round of teen television stars, while gore and terror all but disappeared. HATCHET director Adam green clearly longs for the early days of the VCR, when films like MADMAN (1982), THE BURNING (1981), and THE PROWLER (1981) gave us psycho killers with grudges, deformities, and axes to grindÂżusually very graphically against the heads of promiscuous teens. HATCHET`s killer is Victor Crowley, a grossly misshapen New Orleans bayou boogeyman who suffered an accidental hatchet to the face when his father tried to rescue him from a fire. When brokenhearted college boy Ben (Joel Moore) ditches his friends during a pre-Katrina Mardi Gras in favor of a cheesy Haunted Swamp tour, he finds himself on a boat full of misfits with an inexperienced tour guide (Perry Shen) just in from Detroit. Soon, the boat is sinking, and the passengers who also include an aspiring porn director and his two stars, a middle-aged couple, and a young woman with a vendetta against Crowley--come face-to-face with the monstrous killer.Green clearly isn`t against mixing humor in with his scares---HATCHET is rather liberal with laughs and has a generally lighthearted tone. But when the gore comes in, it`s strong and noxious---though usually very dimly lit, this is messy stuff. He also shows his appreciation for horror film history by giving cameos to Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund and Tony "Candyman" Todd and casting Kane "Jason Voorhees" Hodder as Crowley. HATCHET is a lively, funny, and reverent 1980`s-style gore film that is certain to get a roomful of gorehounds howling with approval. |

This Film Is Not Yet Rated(2006) (DVD) $8.43 Passionate cinephiles can be found casting quizzical glances at the erratic and often conflicting decisions made by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) as they slap ratings onto movies. So in an attempt to make sense of their working methods--which, until now, have remained shrouded in mystery--one of those cinephiles, Kirby Dick (TWIST OF FAITH), has made this full-length motion picture about the inner workings of the MPAA. Produced: 2006 Running Time: 94 min A star-studded investigation into the business of film censorship, Kirby Dick's (Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) entertaining and illuminating documentary offers an exposé of the notoriously secretive methods of the Motion Picture Assoctiation of America's ratings board. Dick's film reveals the hypocrisy of America's screen censors: their notoriously contradictory attitudes to onscreen depictions of violence and sex. It features astonishing archival footage and interviews with a wealth of film directors including Atom Egoyan, Kevin Smith, John Waters, Mary Harron and South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Dick's missions to identify the annoymous men and women who pass judgment on the 'suitability' of American movies and his quest for clearly stated rules finally sees the filmmaker resorting to an ingenious narrative device: the hiring of a highly resourceful private investigator. By turns angry, hilarious and outspoken, This Film Is Not Yet Rated asks whether Holloywood movies and independant films are rated equally for camparable content and whether sexual content in gay-themed movies is given harsher ratings penalties than their heterosexual counterparts. At heart, though, Duck's breakthrough film into the MPAA is a simple and timely plea for transparency. |
