How To Clean Swimming Pool Filter Cartridges

Dirty swimming pool filter cartridges can impair the performance of the pool filtration system. It is very important to maintain the filter cartridges properly and keep them clean. Here are a few tips on cleaning your pool filter cartridges:
Remove the Cartridges: Read through the instruction manual before you start cleaning your filter cartridges. Switch off the pool pump to eliminate the risk of electric shock. Open the air release valve to bleed out the air pressure from the tank and pump. Then remove the cartridges carefully from their canister. It is preferable to wear protective rubber gloves and glasses while removing and cleaning the filter cartridges.
Rinse the Cartridges: Clean the inside and outside of the swimming pool filter cartridges by using a garden hose fitted with a straight-flow nozzle. For best results, it is preferable to hold the nozzle at an angle of 45 degrees and clean the cartridges from top to bottom. Rinse the cartridges several times until all the dirt and debris have been removed.
Soak the Cartridges: Swimming pool filter cartridges often collect impurities, which do not wash off easily, such as algae, suntan lotions, oils, calcium scales, iron and other minerals. In case your filter cartridges still remain dirty after rinsing, you could soak them in an alkaline based cleaning solution. An alkaline based solution can break down the stubborn dirt particles collected on your cartridges.
Mix five gallons of water with a commercial pool filter cleaner, such as trisodium phosphate. However, do not forget to read the instructions given on the label before preparing the solution. Place the swimming pool filter cartridges in the solution and cover the vessel with a lid. Let them soak in the solution for at least 8 to 10 hours.
Rinse Again: Rinse the cartridges again thoroughly with fresh water to remove the cleaning solution. Failing to remove the solution can interrupt the flow of water through the cartridges.
