Wrought Iron Front Doors - One of Your Best Options
Your front door must be tough enough to withstand wind, rain, harsh sun, and would-be intruders, yet beautiful enough to make a good first impression. Meeting those needs can be a tall order for many front doors. This article discusses a number of options including wooden, fiberglass, aluminum and wrought iron font doors.
Most older doors are made of wood or wood veneer, both of which warp. After years of exposure, they also tend to crack, and delaminate. Metal doors also don't last forever, as the surface on some older steel doors can peel.
Whether your front door is in disrepair or you just want to replace a solid door for one with glass panels that offer more light, there are plenty of options available. There are now wooden doors on the market that resist the elements better than earlier versions, as well as metal and fiberglass ones that look like wood but provide greater security at a lower price. The frontrunner, however, appears to be wrought iron front doors.
Perhaps the most important decision is what your door is constructed of. Most options combine several materials; for example, many fiberglass and steel doors have wooden frames. But it's the surface material that most affects appearance, durability, security, and price.
Wooden front doors, in the past, have been the most common. Versatility and beauty are their strong suit. Natural-finish stock and custom wood doors come in oak, cherry, walnut, mahogany, maple, fir, and pine. You'll also find paint-grade doors in several softwood varieties, such as pine and western hemlock.
A steel front door is another choice if security and durability are top priorities. Steel units are stronger than wood or fiberglass doors, and they won't crack or warp. Any dents or dings on these doors can be pulled and puttied with an auto-body repair kit. Premium versions get a vinyl coating similar to the one on vinyl-clad windows for greater weather resistance. Some even have a stainable wood-fiber coating or, on really high-end versions, a laminated-wood veneer.
Fiberglass-composite front doors are tough and maintenance-free, and are a smart choice for harsh or humid climates. They mimic the look of wood with wood-grain texturing and can be stained to match oak, cherry, walnut, and a variety of other woods.
Aluminum front doors have a baked-on enamel finish, so they never need painting and won't rust - which explains the 20-year warranties that are common. You can also match the color and style of your door with an aluminum storm door.
Wrought iron front doors have quietly been gaining in popularity for years. Alone or integrated into your existing alarm system, they provide unmatched, comprehensive security. They are built to last a lifetime, won't rust or corrode and require virtually no maintenance. Added to that are the multitude of customization options, making a wrought iron front door the choice of the majority of homeowners today.
Picking the right front door will pay off in smoother operation, less maintenance, added energy savings and an unmatched curb appeal for your home. The material choice is yours: wooden, steel, aluminum, or wrought iron front doors; make the right choice and you'll have an elegant entry that makes a great first impression for years to come.

Hemlock at Vespers $10.9 Sister Fidelma originally made her debut as one of the decade's most interesting sleuths in short story form. The sharp-witted and astonishingly wise religieuse captured the hearts of many readers as she successfully tackled the most baffling of crimes in her other role as advocate of the law courts of Ireland, using the ancient Brehon Law system. The overwhelming response to these stories launched Fidelma as the heroine of a bestselling series of Celtic crime novels. But it also created a demand for further short stories. HEMLOCK AT VESPERS is the first collection of these stories ever to be published. With its breathtaking range of settings and crimes, it is guaranteed to entertain and intrigue - and is an anthology that no lover of Celtic culture or historical crime should be without. |

Prelude to Hemlock $6.99 Prelude to Hemlock is a black comedy that follows the fortunes of the young narrator, Jeffrey Edwards. A contrarian by nature and libertine by choice, Jeff is charming, caustic, fiercely intelligent...and fiercely self-destructive. Jeff writes lyrics for his sister Kim, a gifted rock musician, and as Kim's musical star rises, the siblings become entangled in events both comic and appalling. Along the way, Jeff contends with his pill-popping mother; his breezy and scheming father; and his dope-smoking friend, Tall Patty. As these characters intertwine and collide, Kim's career approaches the bright brink of success--even as she and Jeff approach the darkest brink of disaster. Jeff understands that "what the righteous really dread is a world with no sinners," but he and Kim cannot quite grasp the cost of truly living as they please. This book is also in print. Hemlock Grove $9.99 An exhilarating reinvention of the gothic novel, inspired by the iconic characters of our greatest myths and nightmares. The body of a young girl is found mangled and murdered in the woods of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania, in the shadow of the abandoned Godfrey Steel mill. A manhunt ensues—though the authorities aren’t sure if it’s a man they should be looking for. Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a foreboding biotech facility owned by the Godfrey family—their personal fortune and the local economy having moved on from Pittsburgh steel—where, if rumors are true, biological experiments of the most unethical kind take place. Others turn to Peter Rumancek, a Gypsy trailer-trash kid who has told impressionable high school classmates that he’s a werewolf. Or perhaps it’s Roman, the son of the late JR Godfrey, who rules the adolescent social scene with the casual arrogance of a cold-blooded aristocrat, his superior status unquestioned despite his decidedly freakish sister, Shelley, whose monstrous medical conditions belie a sweet intelligence, and his otherworldly control freak of a mother, Olivia.   At once a riveting mystery and a fascinating revelation of the grotesque and the darkness in us all, Hemlock Grove has the architecture and energy to become a classic in its own right—and Brian McGreevy the talent and ambition to enthrall us for years to come. |

The Hemlock Cup $13.99 We think the way we do because Socrates thought the way he did; in his unwavering commitment to truth and in the example of his own life, he set the standard for all subsequent Western philosophy. And yet, for twenty-five centuries, he has remained an enigma: a man who left no written legacy and about whom everything we know is hearsay, gleaned from the writings of Plato, Xenophon and Aristophanes. Now Bettany Hughes gives us an unprecedented, brilliantly vivid portrait of Socrates and of his homeland, Athens in its Golden Age. His life spanned “seventy of the busiest, most wonderful and tragic years in Athenian history.” It was a city devastated by war, but, at the same time, transformed by the burgeoning process of democracy, and Hughes re-creates this fifth-century B.C. city, drawing on the latest sources—archaeological, topographical and textual—to illuminate the streets where Socrates walked, to place him there and to show us the world as he experienced it. She takes us through the great, teeming Agora—the massive marketplace, the heart of ancient Athens—where Socrates engaged in philosophical dialogue and where he would be condemned to death. We visit the battlefields where he fought, the red-light district and gymnasia he frequented and the religious festivals he attended. We meet the men and the few women—including his wife, Xanthippe, and his “inspiration” and confidante, Aspasia—who were central to his life. We travel to where he was born and where he died. And we come to understand the profound influences of time and place in the evolution of his eternally provocative philosophy. Deeply informed and vibrantly written, combining historical inquiry and storytelling élan, The Hemlock Cup gives us the most substantial, fascinating, humane depiction we have ever had of one of the most influential thinkers of all time.
