Pro Tips For D.I.Y. Shed Kits

Most homes come with closets, cabinets and attics to store things but what about outside stuff like lawn mowers, wheel barrows and other power tools the wife won’t let you put in the hall closet? A new storage shed can be an extremely functional and an economical addition to your property.

How do you choose A shed kit?

Shed kits can be found at your local Home Depot or Menards and are of good quality. Prices vary quite a bit but the best thing about a kit is that all the hardware is there for you as well as a complete list of the lumber that you need.

Professional Plans

I’m a do it yourself kind of guy and use professionally designed building plans which makes a world of difference not only reduces costs but overall time to complete my projects. What I like most about these blueprints is they come with a full material list down to the last nail and cut sizes for all your lumber.

Location, Location, Location

Now, the next important thing to consider is the location of the shed and exactly what you will be using it for.  Will it require an electric source as well?  It is a good idea to design your shed to match your house or other out buildings on your property so it blends into the overall landscape.

A good set of plans will also have a detailed description of the different shed foundation options and which one is best for your structure and location.  Remember to check with you area’s building and permits authority to make sure you follow all guidelines and building codes.

Whatever foundation you choose to do you must make sure the shed will rest completely level so the doors and windows will fit and operate properly.  You must also make sure that water is diverted away from the foundation so it will not settle and cause the building to lean to one side or the other.
