Clear Your Clutter and Clear Your Mind
De-cluttering is such a popular idea that there is even a "De-Cluttering Week" every year in October. But often it is just that – an idea – and the thought of getting round to sorting out our possessions and clearing out anything that we don't need or want any longer is often too daunting a task for us to know where to begin.
But why do we all have so much clutter in the first place? Well, part of the reason is that we are a nation of shoppers. Shopping, which used to be a necessity for items we needed, is now one of the nation's favourite pastimes. And stores are so good at tempting us to buy that we often return home with things we don't really need. Add to that the instinctive human desire to hoard and very soon our houses start to fill up. Lofts and garages become extended storage space that we fill with items we don't need and often forget we even own.
What is de-cluttering?
It is simply getting rid of anything that we no longer need. Apart from seasonal clothes and seasonal items such as Christmas decorations or gardening equipment, anything that is not regularly used or on display is potential clutter. Other exceptions are photographs, CDs/DVDs and books, all of which may not be used or viewed frequently but which form a collection of memories and cultural enjoyments. De-cluttering is not about throwing out our memories but about throwing out everyday items that are no longer useful. So if we know what our clutter is, why is it so hard to de-clutter?
The benefits of de-cluttering
It is often only when people are moving house that they are forced into sorting out everything they own. But why wait until you are moving? Clearing space in your home can help create a peaceful environment that will calm your mind after a busy day. And if your home is organised and clutter-free then that will lead to an organised, clutter-free mind that will view daily troubles in a clearer, more serene way.
Your home is after all a place of sanctuary from the world outside and having control over your private space can be the first step to having control over your life. But in order to embark on the arduous task of de-cluttering we need to feel motivated that a clutter-free home will be worth all the effort. If you cannot appreciate the advantages of de-cluttering then you will never do it.
The 4 main advantages are:
- A calm, organised living space will lead to a calm, organised life.
- The satisfaction of supporting a charity close to your heart
- Making money from selling your unwanted goods
- Recycling and doing your bit for the environment
Avoid excuses
Once you have convinced yourself of the benefits of de-cluttering and motivated yourself to embark on the task, watch out for the typical excuses we all make to ourselves for not assigning an item to the clutter pile:
- You might need it at a later date – in a cluttered home, you are unlikely to find the item at the point when you need it so just get rid of it now.
- It was a present from someone you are fond of – they will probably never notice it has gone so don't hang on to it to avoid hurting their feelings.
- You hope an item will appreciate in value. If you genuinely think it might then ask an expert, but if the expert opinion is that it won't increase in value then it is just clutter.
- It reminds you of a particular person or place. Whilst de-cluttering is not about throwing away precious memories, it is about clearing out items with little significance in your life now. Keep photos of the person or place if you wish to relive the moment.
- I have too much stuff to transport to the recycling depot or charity shop. It is cheap and easy to hire a van for the day and transport your items in one simple trip.

Amazing Space: A Book of Answers for Kids $12.95 Amazing Space: A Book of Answers for Kids From School Library JournalGrade 5-8. Arranging her material into nine general categories, Campbell presents a great deal of information on space exploration, the solar system, individual planets, galaxies, and related phenomena. Diagrams are used to help explain some points, while sidebars add interesting factoids and related anecdotes or suggest experiments. The writing is clear and the information logically arranged within each chapter, leading readers from the simpler points to more complex subjects. Most answers are brief, but they provide sufficient detail to be useful for report writers as well as those satisfying personal curiosity. A lengthy glossary offers definitions of terms, many of which are explained more fully in the text. A bibliography of sources is included, and readers might also use it as a guide to further reading. The careful attention to sequencing and useful index make this question-and-answer title an informative introduction to astronomy and space.?Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA Book Details: Reading level: Ages 9-12 Paperback: 192 pages Publisher: Jossey-Bass (April 11, 1997) Language: English Book Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 0.6 inches |

Space Shuttle Thermal Tile Box Set: 1" Triangle Section $22.95 Space Shuttle Thermal Tile Box Set: 1" Triangle Section Includes a Statement of Authenticity Card The Space Store is the sole owner of the only legally owned Space Shuttle thermal tile material for resale. This is an actual piece of thermal tile material that was made in the late 1970s for the Space Shuttle Columbia , the first shuttle to fly into space. Our 1 inch section is available for a limited time only. These sections are only cut from sections in which we could not get a full 1.33 inches (or more) for the larger sizes. We only have a limited amount of thermal tile material and once they're gone, they're gone forever Material Background: Thermal tiles are made of a 'foam glass' material. Each Space Shuttle contains more than 34,000 separate tiles, each specifically cut for its own location, to protect the Shuttle when reentering the Earth's atmosphere. Note: This tile material is not from the loss of STS-107. It comes from the same lot of material originally installed on Columbia Packaging: Packaging includes a clear plastic box with an authentic piece of Space Shuttle tile material resting on a sky blue foam insert. It also now includes an inscribed plate, which includes information about the Thermal Tile. This is an excellent educational item for students and a must-have for collectors. Product features are presented below. Also see below for more information on how this tile material became commercially available. Supplies are limited. Plastic display box is 3 x 3 x 1 inches The tile material is a 1 inch triangle Includes an inscribed information plaque Includes a Statement of Authenticity Card Note: Tile material is brittle and has a chalky film. This film can get on your hands and irritate the skin if handled directly. History of the Tile Material: In October 1978, D.G. Noble was assigned as Chief of U.S. Air Force Quality Assurance on all NASA contracts at Lockheed Missile and Space Systems in Sunnyvale, California. The main NASA contract at that time was for the production of Space Shuttle tile for the first Space Shuttle to fly in space, Columbia. At that time, Space Shuttle tile was being thrown into a large discard receptacle. There were no strict policies in effect at that time, precluding removal of anything from these receptacles. Noble's interest in the discarded tile was as an insulating material for a fireplace, so he removed enough material to accomplish this purpose. A few years later, a NASA representative came to Noble's home to discuss when and how he obtained the discarded Space Shuttle tile. NASA concluded that Noble had obtained the tile legally which could also be sold commercially. This was reaffirmed in a letter from the Inspector General for NASA to Michael Noble in June 22, 1994 letter from George T. Lenehan, Chief Counsel, Office of the Chief Counsel, for Ames Research Center, NASA. The Space Store legally purchased Mr. Noble's entire thermal tile material stock in July, 2009. |

The Voice of Dr.Wernher Von Braun $22.95 Dr. Wernher von Braun presented approximately 500 speeches in the years from 1947 to 1976. His topics varied widely, from education and religion to the Cold War and space exploration. Inevitably, he managed to relate a general survey of the space program into a majority of his speeches, and extol the virtues of space exploration as they relate to human values and society. Forty-seven of his speeches have been selected and presented in chronological order in this book, giving the reader a comprehensive picture of von Braun's experiences and passions, the effects that society had on him throughout his life, and the contributions that he in turn made to society. His strong feelings concerning the former Soviet Union and the Cold War are seen to be a natural consequence of having lived and worked his early life in a dictatorial Germany. By comparison, his appreciation of the quality of life in America comes through clearly. Wernher von Braun was known as the quintessential rocket scientist, the leading progenitor of both the V-2 missile and the Saturn V launch vehicle, the two land-mark accomplishments in the field of rocketry. But inside the scientist was a man of passion and conviction, a man whose speeches were always food for thought, as this book makes abundantly clear. Features Paperback: 232 pages Publisher: Collector's Guide Publishing Inc(2007) Language: English Reviews "An insightful look at one of the most well-known historical figures in the American space program." -News & Notes, NASA History Division. "An interesting reflection of von Braun's attitude to the space program." -Universe Today "A man whose speeches were always food for thought, as this book makes abundantly clear." -Quest magazine "A rare look into the mind of one of space exploration's most important pioneers. Recommended." -SFREVU |

Astrojax Saturn $18.95 Saturn Astrojax ...the spectacular night version of Astrojax! As part of NASA's Toys in Space program, astronauts on the International Space Station played with a set of Astrojax in 2002. Asked whether Astojax works in space, astronaut Peggy Ann Whitson said: "Astrojax are actually a lot of fun here in space too" and went on demonstrating the toy. And it worked indeed! It kept spinning even after it was let go and floated beautifully through space. The Saturn features the same patented construction with precision machined metal weights as the Plus, but each ball features two bright LEDs (light emitting diode) that create dazzling light patterns when you play. Through an elegant push button control, the LEDs can be switched on and set to either continuous or disco mode. Continuous mode creates patterns reminiscent of beautiful Bengal light effects, while Disco mode is a high speed strobe effect that produces sparkling light traces in space. Each clear ball is a durable polycarbonate shell containing a specially tailored chip inside with two replaceable batteries (included). Each ball has two LEDs with a different color lights per ball (red, yellow, and green LEDs). Each set of Astrojax comes with an aj-dos (Astrojax Docking Station). This cool holder allows the player to carry or store their Astrojax. Wrap the string neatly around aj-dos and keep in a pocket or even on your belt. Or use the loop-through hole and wear around your neck. The tip of the aj-dos allows the player to switch the lights between off, continuous mode, and disco mode. Choose from three different colored bands including orange, green, and purple/pink. *Saturn Astrojax set to "Continuous Mode" *Saturn Astrojax set to "Strobe or Disco Mode" |

The Keck Telescope Model Kit $18.95 The Keck Telescope To get an idea of the scale of this giant Earth-based telescope, notice the tiny railings surrounding the central hexagon and its jutting platforms. They're a little taller than waist-height. The twin Keck Telescopes, on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, are indeed huge. They each have four times the light-collecting area of the 200-inch Hale Telescope on Mount Palomar, which, until Keck, was the world's premier astronomical telescope. Builders of the massive Hale had reached the limit of their technology. A telescope of Hale's construction having 4x its light collecting area would have had about eight times its mass - technically and financially an impossibility to construct. But the Keck Telescopes are not massive behemoths of the old school. Their use of computers, and highly advanced mechanical and systems designs have introduced a new paradigm. This Space Craft SCIENCE KIT shows exactly what that new paradigm is. As you build the structure, you see first hand how strong the lightweight structure becomes by virtue of its design. You see exactly how all 36 lightweight mirror segments are floated by computer-controlled actuators which maintain the overall mirror's perfect shape. And you can see exactly where the sensors are that let the computer do that. You see how stable its mounting system is (Keck uses a computer-controlled azimuth-elevation mounting system, a departure from the equatorial systems of older telescopes, with their asymmetric load bearing). All these concepts become perfectly clear, right at your fingertips. But let's go back to those waist-high railings. The scale of this model is close to the model-railroad "N" guage, so it isn't hard to find tiny plastic human figures or vehicles which, when displayed with the Keck model, illustrate its startling size. |

Creating Space $30.95 Creating Space The Story of the Space Age Told Through ModelsThe Heavens - and trying to get there - have always intrigued man, and have been included in our artwork throughout all of history. In recent years they have been the subject of countless books, articles, radio and television shows and films, and have more and more featured the practical method of achieving these dreams - Spaceships. Creating Space takes us on a journey through the history of the space age, up to the present and beyond. From the advent of the "space race" with the V-2 rocket of World War II to the International Space Station and the future, a complete and detailed chronicling of vehicles is given, side by side with pictures and details of models that depict the multitude of aircraft and spacecraft developed throughout the world. In addition, extensive appendices provide details of all of the space-related models ever made and the many manufacturers and distributors who have supplied them - all in the words of an experienced professional insider. Mat Irvine worked in the BBC Visual Effects Department for 20 years, contributing to many projects including Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Edge of Darkness, the various NASA flights, and many science and space-oriented documentaries and programs. Creating Space is presented in 12 chapters which logically group together the history, the vehicles and the models into logical and meaningful categories. This book will be equally valuable to space enthusiasts, modellers, and space historians. |
