Swimming Pool Maintenance - The 5 Easy Steps to Maintain Your Swimming Pool

Congratulations, you are lucky enough to have your own swimming pool! Whether you just moved into a home with a pool, or economic times are forcing you to consider letting your pool guy go, this article will get you headed towards being an expert on your own pool.

1. You need a test kit. You don't need anything fancy that checks for every aspect of the water. Those kits are expensive and difficult to use and frankly, you wouldn't know what to do with the results anyway. All you need is a basic two part test kit that checks chlorine and PH available here or at your local pool store. The Chlorine reading is on the left side of the tester and is the foundation of your water chemistry. A daily dosage of chlorine is fed to your pool using a chlorinator, whether its a canister near the filter or a basic plastic floater, you will be figuring out how many chlorine tablets per week is ideal for YOUR pool. A good rule of thumb to start with is one tablet per 10,000 gallons per week. Check your chlorine level frequently at first and through trial and error you will figure out your pool's chlorine "hunger". A tiny pool in Miami might need ten tablets per week with the control valve wide open, while a huge pool in western New York might need just one tablet with the chlorinator barely cracked open. PH if you remember from Science class is a measurement of the acidity or basicity of a solution, in this case pool water wants to be 7. 4 which is the in the middle of the comparator scale on the right. When you see a strange shade on the PH side of your tester its time to bring a water sample to your local pool store. They are the people most aware of how to adjust PH and alkalinity of pool water in your region.

2. Shock your pool. Our daily dosage of chlorine from tablets is sanitizing the water 24/7 and once a week in the summer the sanitized contaminants (chloramines) need to be broken down and cleansed from the water. We do that by instantly bringing the chlorine level to 10 parts per million. This is the same for everybody, one bag of shock or one gallon of liquid chlorine per 10,000 gallons oxidizes those chloramines. If you live in a hot climate your chlorine level will probably start dropping to zero the day you need to shock, and if thats happening once a week on the same day. . . high five!!! You have that pool on a leash. In cooler climates you will probably find a nice constant chlorine level throughout the summer and a non-chlorine oxidizer (shock & swim) is a great option for you.

3. Clean your filter. There are three different types of filters. How you clean it and how often it needs to be cleaned varies based on type, whether or not it was sized properly for your pool, and where you live. 4. Circulation. Just as important as water chemistry, if not more so. Your pump should run at least 8 hours a day in the summer. The flow from your return jets should be strong enough that its difficult to hold a finger in front of it. Keep your filter clean and make note of what the filter pressure guage reads right after a cleaning. That is your clean pressure and when you see a reading of 8 to 10 units higher than your clean pressure its time for another filter cleaning.
