Explore the Infamous Middle Ages in Paris's Illustrious Musée De Cluny

One part medieval mansion and one part Gallo-Roman ruin, Musée De Cluny is a fitting tribute to that infamous period in European history known as the middle ages.  Renowned world over for its impressive collection of medieval artefacts and artworks, the museum primarily houses priceless remnants belonging to the 7th and 8th centuries such as gold and ivory items, manuscripts, antique furniture and works of art.

 

Housed within an expansive ancient compound that was first owned by the abbots of Cluny in the 14th century the distinctly gothic and renaissance style mansion also included Mary Tudor wife of King Louis XII  and the Bishop of Clermont Jacques d'Amboise among its famed inhabitants. The brainchild of art connoisseur Alexandre du Sommerard who donated his remarkable collection of medieval/renaissance artefacts after his death in the mid 1840 has seen the museum evolve through the decades in both size and reputation since inception.

 

Reputed as the primary authority on medieval period in Europe, the museum's most prized item is of course the La Dame à la Licorne or Lady and the Unicorn tapestries which dates back to the 15th century.  As one of the most exquisite examples of European art in the middle ages, the silk and wool Flanders tapestries have never failed to impress those that gaze upon the magnificent series of intricately designed drapes. Other highlights include the Gallo-Roman bath ruins at the museum, which date as far back as the 3rd century. Dubbed the Baths of Cluny; the baths were constructed in 200 A.D but were partially destroyed by barbarians a century later. The Sainte-Chapelle stained glass windows are also another point of interest while the "severed heads" of the Gallery of Kings contains stone sculptures extracted from Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral at the time of the revolt.

 

The museum also has a gift shop where visitors can purchase books and toys with medieval-themes as well as miniaturized tapestry collections to take home as souvenirs.
