Do test strips really work? Yes. Test strips were developed in the medical diagnostic industry in the 1960s. Since that time, they have replaced liquid reagent tests for urine and blood testing. AquaChek uses that same technology for its pool and spa test strips. 2. How accurate are they? Test strips are at minimum comparable inaccuracy to liquid color comparator tests. Because test strips require less user technique, we believe they actually deliver greater accuracy. 3. What information supports the accuracy of test strips?Our test strips are manufactured and released against standard reference procedures fromthe 17th Edition of Standard MethodsFor the Examination of Water and Waste Water. 4. Is DPD more accurate?No. DPD can be affected by interferences, such as an over-abundance of monochloramines or potassium monopersulfate (used for shock-treating pools.) These can give a false positive reading for free chlorine with the DPD chemistry. Recognized technical studies are available to support these claims. 5. What is the shelf life? Test strips average 24 months dating from the time of manufacture, with the exception of AquaChek Silver and AquaChek Green for Cyanuric Acid. These two strips have an average shelf life of 18 months. 6. Can more values for each test be added to color charts?Yes. However there would not be enough color differentiation between the values. This would make it difficult for the user to make a decision when comparing thetest strip to the color patches on the label. 7. Do I need to test as frequently with test strips?Yes. We suggest testing both ends of the pool a minimum of 2 times per week, and spas before each use. 8. Salt: White Gold of the Ancient Maya $33.64 In "Salt: White Gold of the Ancient Maya," Heather McKillop reports the discovery, excavation, and interpretation of Late Classic Maya salt works on the coast of Belize, transforming our knowledge of the Maya salt trade and craft specialization while providing new insights on sea-level rise in the Late Holocene as well. Salt, basic to human existence, was scarce in the tropical rainforests of Belize and Guatemala, where the Classic Maya civilization thrived between A.D. 300 and 900. The prevailing interpretation has been that salt was imported from the north coast of the Yucatan. However, the underwater discovery and excavation of salt works in Punta Ycacos Lagoon demonstrate that the Maya produced salt by boiling brine in pots over fires at specialized workshops on the Belizean coast. The Punta Ycacos salt works are clear evidence that craft specialization took place in a nondomestic setting and that production occurred away from the economic and political power of the urban Maya rulers, thus providing new clues to the Maya economy and sea trade. McKillop also presents new data on sea-level rise in the Late Holocene that extend geologists' and geographers' sea-level curves from earlier eras. Likewise, she enters the environmental-versus-cultural debate over the Classic Maya collapse by evaluating the factors that led to the abandonment of the Punta Ycacos salt works at the end of the Classic Period, synonymous with the abandonment of inland Maya cities. |
